Water Safety Tips for Outdoor Adventures

Planning and situational awareness

Good water safety starts before you leave home. Check the weather and local water conditions, know where safe entry and exit points are, and avoid unfamiliar spots after heavy rain or at night. Always tell a friend or family member where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

Personal preparation and equipment

Dress for the water and the temperature. Wear a properly fitted lifejacket for boating, paddleboarding, or when conditions are uncertain, and use thermal layers or a wetsuit when water is cold. Keep a charged phone in a waterproof pouch and bring a whistle or other signaling device. Avoid relying on pool-style inflatables in open water; they can fail in currents. These precautions reduce the chance of getting into trouble and make rescue easier if it’s needed.

Recognize and respond to cold water shock

Cold water can incapacitate even strong swimmers within seconds. If you fall in unexpectedly, remember the “float to live” technique: lean back, keep your airway clear, control your breathing, and float until the initial shock passes; then call for help or swim to safety if you can. Practicing floating in a safe, supervised pool helps build the reflexes you’ll need.

Safe choices around others and pets

Never go alone when venturing into unfamiliar water. Supervise children closely and keep dogs on a leash near fast or rocky water; if a pet gets into trouble, do not enter the water yourself—reach from shore with a pole or throw a buoyant object and call for help. Alcohol and water do not mix—avoid drinking when you’re near or on water.

If you see someone in trouble

If you witness an emergency, phone the local emergency number immediately, encourage the person to float, and throw a buoyant aid rather than entering the water yourself. Trained rescuers and lifeguards are best equipped to handle rescues; your role is to call, support from shore, and keep yourself safe.

Final mindset

Approach water with respect and curiosity rather than confidence. Prevention, awareness, and good judgment—planning routes, using proper gear, and knowing how to float—are the habits that keep summer adventures safe and enjoyable.
